Here's a simple truth that might surprise you: Australia could face food accessibility challenges, even though we produce enough food to feed more than 70 million people worldwide.
Eating my breakfast this morning, I was grateful for my food and thinking about every farmer needs fuel for their tractors, fertiliser for their crops, and tools to protect their plants. Many of these essentials come from overseas suppliers.
🚚 What happens if transport routes are disrupted?
🌏 What if global supply chains face challenges?
☁️ What if natural disasters affect infrastructure?
Sounds like something we all have experienced before...
The Australian Strategic Policy Institute's new National Food Security Preparedness Green Paper calls this our "dangerous fantasy" - believing we'll always have secure food access just because we produce a lot.
But here's the good news: We can strengthen our food system. And it starts with all of us understanding that food security affects every Aussie family.
Your role matters:
👐 Support local food businesses when you can
👐 Reduce food waste at home (Australia wastes 7.6 million tonnes of food annually - that's enough to fill the MCG nine times!)
👐 Learn about food security initiatives in your community
Food security supports employment for many Australians working across our food system.
What's one simple step you'll take to support our Aussie food resilience?
